What is it, what does it do and how do I use it? Part 3: Pump

Every pool is equipped with a pump. Some are single speed, some can have many speeds but the fact is, we need to move that water in our pool so its not a swamp! Some people have the pump hooked up to a timer system to try and save money on electricity and some pumps have timers built in but since your pump costs less than one cup of coffee PER DAY to operate, the benefits of running it 24/7 outweigh those savings (especially if you have water quality issues!). Pool pumps do not pull water and then push it, they push the water which creates vacuum that pulls more water in (MIND BLOWER). That is why our ‘self priming’ pumps need to be filled with water before turning them on. Inside residential pumps you will find another basket. This basket will be a slightly smaller mesh than the skimmer basket to again trap particles and keep them from damaging the pump impeller (part that moves the water). These baskets should be inspected and cleaned daily as part of your maintenance routine. As for the pump itself, it then pushes this strained water through the rest of our pool circulation system.
