What is it, what does it do and how do I use it? Part 6: Chlorinator

The last piece of equipment before the water returns to the pool from the equipment pad is our chlorinator. In some pools this can be a chlorine dispenser that you put 3″ tabs in and on some pools it can be a salt water generator. In all systems, the rule is: FILTER, HEAT, TREAT Since our heater is so sensitive to sanitizing treatment (chlorine, bromine, ozone, UV) we need to stick to this rule to protect it from premature damage. Not all pools are set up with a method to add sanitizer. In some, you have to add manually or use a floating dispenser (and that is fine). A dispensing system just adds chemicals on a regular basis removing that job from the ‘hunny-do’ list. Like all equipment, there will be regular maintenance needed. This might be as simple as a visual inspection or greasing an O ring. Most salt water chlorine generators will at some point require higher maintenance such as acid cleaning the cell. Your maintenance list can be found in the owners manual or if that has been used for the campfire, most can be found online these days.
