What is it, what does it do and how do I use it? Part 5: Heater

Not every pool has a heater. They are expensive to install and can be very susceptible to damage from water chemistry. Despite this, they allow us to enjoy the pool by heating the water to a comfortable level and extend our pool season in both the spring and fall when overnight temperatures are lower. Most pool heaters are going to burn fossil fuels such as propane or natural gas due to the large amount of water to treat. In some areas, solar arrays can be used to transfer the heat from the sun to the pool water. All of these systems utilize sensors to enhance their performance. The common sensors we see are pressure switches to detect if the water is moving enough to run the heater and temperature sensors which allow us to regulate the heat added to the water. Water temperature is a personal thing. When I was younger, a temperature of 76 degrees was on the border of being too hot. Now that I’m old, if the water is below 83 degrees its too cold (this coming summer I suspect that will become 85 degrees!)
